Medical Massage is result oriented and the treatment is specifically directed to resolve conditions that have been diagnosed and prescribed by a Physician. The therapist may use a variety of modalities or procedures during the treatment, but will focus the Medical Massage treatment only on the areas of the body related to the diagnosis and prescription.
Connective Tissue Massage
Connective Tissue Massage (CTM) is a dynamic approach to bodywork that releases myofascial restrictions. CTM relieves chronic tension, increase ease of movement, improves posture, and enhances self-awareness. These results are often achieved with remarkable efficiency, providing immediate relief from symptoms without requiring excessive force. Because of this, CTM can benefit almost anyone, and is useful in a wide variety of circumstances ranging from accidents to illnesses to managing the stresses of daily life.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep tissue massage is a type of massage therapy that concentrates on rearranging deeper tissue layers of the muscles and connective tissues. Reminiscent of Swedish massage, this massage utilizes many of the same movements and techniques though the pressure is usually more. Some of its strokes also resemble classic massage therapy, however, its movements are slow and the pressure intense on tense areas. Deep tissue massage is especially useful for persistently tense and contracted areas, for example, stiff neck, lower back stiffness and sore shoulders. This massage is really beneficial in chronic pain, limited mobility, postural problems, osteoarthritis pain, fibromyalgia, muscle tension or spasm, and for quick recovery from injuries. Whenever there is any chronic muscle tension or injury, the problem is usually caused by adhesions (bands of aching, stiff tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Adhesions are capable of obstructing circulation and causing pain, restricted movement, and swelling. Deep tissue massage works effectively by actually breaking these adhesions to lessen pain and reinstate normal movement. To carry this out, the massage therapists normally use direct deep pressure across the muscles grain.
Sports massage is designed to help athletes prepare their bodies for optimal performance, recover after a big event, or function well during training. But you don’t have to be in the Olympics to benefit from sports massage. Sports massage is also good for people with injuries, chronic pain or restricted range of motion. Swedish massage is the most commonly offered and best known type of massage. It was developed by a Swedish physiologist, Henri Peter Ling at the University of Stockholm in 1812. It uses a firm but gentle pressue to improve the circulation, ease muscle aches and tension, improve flexibility and create relaxation. Swedish massage employs five different movements: * long, gliding strokes * kneading of individual muscles * friction * hacking or tapping * vibration The therapist generally uses massage oil to facilitate making long, smooth strokes over the body. Swedish massage is done with the person covered by a sheet, a technique called “draping”. One part of the body uncovered, massaged, and then covered up before moving on to another part of the body. Swedish massage is the foundation for other types of Western massage, including sports, deep tissue and aromatherapy.
